COPPER NICKEL (CUPRONICKEL)

Cupronickel (copper nickel) alloys of copper, nickel and strengthening elements such as iron and manganese exhibit superior corrosion resistance in seawater. The most common alloys are 90/10 and 70/30, both used for marine hardware and piping systems on ships and offshore platforms. A wide variety of piping fittings is available. The high cost of nickel has prevented widespread use of the alloy in production yachts but it may be found in vessels at the top end of the market, superyachts and similar.

Copper nickel alloys with 5, 10 and 30 per cent nickel plus 1–2 per cent iron are available as Cunifer (Kunifer). The 90/10 version is widely used as automotive brake pipes.
